SOMBRAS DE UMA ESSÊNCIA [SHADOWS OF AN ESSENCE]

Hugo Lami

Library of New University of Lisbon, Caparica Campus, 2015

A tip of a string, in Shadows of an Essence we are before the first solo show of Hugo Lami, before the dawn of a pathway that begins necessarily in painting – from the installation developed for the site specific of the library cloister of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Caparica Campus, to the surplus paintings[AC4]  that not only circulate it but, above all, foster it.

Inside, a line follows, pulsating with life, breaks path between the works. Either traced or drained, a line extends, overcomes and suspends... A line that goes out to be repeated, a line that accumulates and branches to the building grids, records of mental and physical circuits, memories, multiple experiences.

In the course of this string [or line?], the vibrant body of work that Hugo Lami presents us with takes the world as object, this world carved by light and shadow, this world we inhabit and that inhabits us, invades us, intersects and sensitizes with the same light whenever we open our eyes, and that covers whenever we close them. His paintings operates passionately about this sensitive world, occupied with everyday abstractions we call color, shapes, textures, shadows and symbols to bring to the field of visibility the secret aspects of reality, the shapes of things not discovered, or, in other words, disclose, reveal essences.

The line follows, pulsating, pierced or pierced by painting, flowing between the veils of reality, in and for all senses, and beyond them, this crazy and endless search of deepness, of truth.
